Jersey City, NJ... The College of New Jersey baseball team took both games of the New Jersey Athletic Conference double header against New Jersey City University on Saturday. The Lions improve to 22-6 and 10-3 in the conference, while the Gothic Knights fall to 17-14 and 5-8 in the NJAC.
In game one, the Lions took the lead early when they scored three runs in the second inning.
Ryan Fischer (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) drove in two with a double, and
Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) knocked Fischer home with a single.Â
The Gothic Knights were able to string together six runs, with two coming in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 6-3 lead heading into the ninth inning, however the Lions did not give up.
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) drove in a run with a double, then
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) doubled in Shindler to make it 6-5. The Lions tied it up when
Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) knocked in pinch runner
Matt Giacose (Wycoff, NJ/Ramapo) with a sacrifice fly.
Jacob Simon (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown) delivered the clutch hit to put the Lions up 7-6, then in the bottom of the ninth
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) sealed the win and made his sixth save of the season.Â
Joe Cirillo (Fairfield, NJ/DePaul Catholic) was the winning pitcher, and went 8 innings allowing five earned runs while striking out eight. The eight ks puts him at fifth place all-time in program history as he now has 183 on his career.
In game two, the Lions put three runs up on the board in the first inning. Shindler drove in a run with a single, then scored after an infield hit and an NJCU error. Simon beat out an infield hit to make it 3-0, a lead which starter
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill. NJ/Cherry Hill West) did not come close to relinquishing. He threw a complete game shutout, and allowed only four hits while striking out nine. The nine strikeouts slates him ninth all time as he now has 164 on his career.Â
The Lions will return to the diamond on Sunday April 22nd for an NJACÂ game against #2 Rowan at George Ackerman Park.Â
