No. 8 Frostburg State Defeats Football, 47-7

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ football team hung tough with No. 8 Frostburg State through the first quarter of Saturday afternoon's NJAC football game at Lions Stadium, but the Lions turned the ball over on three of its four possessions in the second quarter. That helped the Bobcats score 24 points in the second period on their way to a 47-7 victory over TCNJ. Ibn Bailey had a strong game for the Lions. He finished with 173 all-purpose yards, including 151 in kick return yardage.

TCNJ (0-2, 0-1) held Frostburg State to a field goal on its first possession, stopping the Bobcats' drive at the TCNJ 8 yard line. Jalen Harmon broke up Conner Cox's pass on third down. That led to a 26-yard field goal attempt for Frostburg that opened the scoring.

The teams traded punts for three possessions, and that third punt from TCNJ to Frostburg's Terrell Brown turned into a 52-yard return for a touchdown. That made it 10-0 Frostburg with 3:45 left in the first quarter.

The score stayed there into the second quarter when turnovers came at inopportune times for the Lions. A fumble by TCNJ led to an eight-play, 67-yard drive for Frostburg. Malik Morris caught a 20-yard pass from Cox to make it 17-0. On TCNJ's next possession, the Lions turned the ball over on downs when a poor snap on a punt didn't allow Zach Warcola a chance to kick it away. FSU scored three plays later to make it 24-0.

Frostburg kicked a field goal after another turnover to make it 27-0, and the Bobcats capped the first half scoring in the final seconds after an interception gave them the ball at the TCNJ 13. The touchdown pass with just four seconds remaining sent the game into the intermission with Frostburg holding a 34-0 lead.

The Frostburg splash plays continued as Morris returned a blocked punt 30 yards to make it 41-0.

TCNJ forced a turnover later in the quarter. Erik Graham stripped Grayson Boyce, and Jalen Harmon recovered it at the TCNJ 18. On the ensuing drive, Andrew Donoghue completed a 14-yard pass to Jaiden Elliott, and Mark Pacini had a 20-yard run to midfield. Pacini led the Lions on the ground, finishing with 77 yards on 16 carries.

Donoghue's rush of 13 yards later in the drive would have set the Lions up at the Frostburg 33, but it was called back due to holding. The drive ended with a failed fourth-down attempt.

Backup quarterback Dave Jachera and Pacini helped the Lions get down the field in the fourth quarter on their way to a touchdown. Jachera had runs of 12 and 9 yards early in the sequence, and he also completed a couple passes to Bailey. A 13-yard connection with Bailey on 4th-and-6 prolonged the drive.

A pass interference call on Frostburg brought the ball to the Bobcats' 13, and Aydon Chavis rolled into the end zone on the very next play to make it 47-7.

Xavier Santos and Max Busca each had nine tackles to lead the defense. Jared Lyles had a sack.

TCNJ has a short week as it travels to No. 9 Wesley on Friday night.
