EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey lacrosse team used four goals each from
Erin Harvey and
Alexandria Fitzpatrick to defeat previously unbeaten Colorado College 15-9 Thursday night. The 17
th-ranked Lions improved to 8-5, while the 21
st-ranked Tigers fell to 14-1. The Tigers are also the top team in the West Region in the first regional rankings released by the NCAA earlier this week.
Â
Kasey Donoghue opened the scoring for the Lions scoring woman-up to give the Lions an early lead.
Â
Following a Colorado College goal which tied the score, Fitzpatrick took over. Fitzpatrick took the ensuing draw and did not allow anyone to get in her way scoring just nine seconds later to put TCNJ back on top. She would score again 18 seconds after that, again allowing no other player to possess the ball.
Â
Leading 3-2,
Olivia Cleale scored her 20
th of the season, taking advantage of another woman-up opportunity. Fitzpatrick then delivered again, taking the draw and needing just ten seconds to find the back of the net.
Â
TCNJ would go into the half up 7-4.
Â
Fitzpatrick opened the scoring in the second half, scoring her fourth of the game to spark a 5-1 run during which,
Kathleen Jaeger scored two of her three goals. When Cleale found
Allie Gorman to complete the run, TCNJ was looking at a 12-5 advantage.
Â
The Tigers fought back, cutting the Lions lead to 13-8, but Harvey scored each of the Lions two remaining goals to thwart off any comeback attempt. Harvey did a little bit of everything for the Lions, finishing with four goals, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers. The four goals and four caused turnovers were both career-highs.
Â
"It comes from having an attitude where we're not going to allow our opponent to get the ball," said Harvey. "Coach always tells us, 'they can't score if they don't have the ball'. On defense, I just stayed in my position, took care of my responsibility, and let things come to me."
Â
It was also a second straight game with a career-high in draw controls from Fitzpatrick, who finished with nine.
Lilly Bernardi led all players with a career-high five ground balls.
Â
TCNJ held a 16-9 edge in caused turnovers, and 28-16 advantage in ground balls.
Â
The Lions return to action Saturday when they resume conference play against Ramapo College. First draw from Lions Stadium is at 1 p.m.
