Glus Earns 300th Career Victory

WAYNE, N.J. – TCNJ head baseball coach Dean Glus earned his 300th career victory in the No. 3/7 Lions' game-one road victory over William Paterson in an NJAC doubleheader. The Lions left very little doubt, earning a 19-7 victory. TCNJ jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the game.

Glus came into his 12th season as the team's head coach with 276 career victories, and with game one's win, he's now 300-180-1. Heading into this season, the Lions have qualified for five NCAA tournaments and 10 NJAC tournaments under Glus. The Lions have had just one losing season during his tenure.

Saturday's win in game one carried many of the same characteristics that have marked several of the Lion's victories this season: a powerful offense matched with strong starting pitching.

The Lions broke open the game in the third, already leading, 1-0. David Cardona III led off the inning with a single, and Jacob Simon followed with his fourth home run of the season to make it 3-0.

A hit batsman and three walks later, the bases were loaded with another run across to push the lead to 4-0. Thomas Persichetti singled home both Grant Sible and Matt Giacose to make it 6-0. The three walks in that inning were not uncommon. The Lions drew 14 free passes in the game.

Giacose doubled home Tommy McCarthy as part of a three-run fourth inning to make it 9-0. The Lions scored three more in the fifth, two more in the sixth, and three more in the seventh to take a 17-0 lead. In the sixth, Ryan Fischer doubled home Cardona and McCarthy, who also doubled. Simon had a two-run double of his own in the seventh, and he later scored on a Gary Otten single to make it 17-0.

Six players had multi-hit games for the Lions. Persichetti led the way with four hits, two runs and two RBIs. McCarthy reached base six times with three hits and three walks. Simon had three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. Cardona, Fischer and Danny Borup each had two hits.

Peter Nielsen improved to 4-1 on the season, pitching eight innings and striking out five. He didn't allow a run until the two he gave up in the bottom of the eighth, breaking the 17-0 shutout.

In game two, Michael Walley threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout as the Lions swept the doubleheader with a 7-0 win. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter as he moved to 5-0 on the season.

Cardona, Simon and Otten each had two hits. Cardona walked twice. Persichetti also reached base four times, tallying a triple and three free passes.

Those four guys gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the first. Simon singled home Persichetti, and Otten singled home Cardona. Cardona doubled home Persichetti to make it 3-0 in the third, and he later scored on a McCarthy sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Simon drove home two more runs to extend the lead to 6-0. The Lions finished the scoring with a Cardona single in the ninth to bring home Persichetti.

The Lions return to action at home on Monday against Ursinus at 4 p.m.
