Borup Tallies 100th Hit as No. 14 Baseball Splits With Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. – The 14th ranked TCNJ baseball team split in New Jersey Athletic Conference action against Ramapo College on Saturday. Ramapo took game one 7-2 before the Lions bounced back to take game two 6-3. In game one, senior shortstop Danny Borup recorded his 100th career hit.

Borup hit the century mark with a base hit in the ninth inning. He has played in 78 games with 65 starts for the Lions the past four seasons. Heading into today he was hitting .360 on his career with 34 RBIs and 76 runs scored.

The Roadrunners controlled game one, and built a 5-0 lead after three innings. After seven they led 7-0, then the Lions pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Tommy McCarthy belted a two run shot to pull within 7-2. The homer was the second of his career. McCarthy went 2-4 in game one with the two RBIs, and Borup posted a 2-4 line as well.

In the second game, Ramapo took a 1-0 lead yet the Lions countered to even it up at 1-1. Jacob Simon drove in the first run with an RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Ramapo took a 3-1 lead in the third, then TCNJ cut it to 3-2 by way of a Matt Giacose RBI groundout. The Lions scored one in the seventh and three in the eighth to build a three run lead. Ryan Fischer tied it up with an RBI double, then David Cardona III put the Lions on top with an RBI double of his own.

Gary Otten singled in a run to make it 5-3, then Fischer tacked on another with a base hit. The offense proved to be enough for the Lions pitching staff. Michael Walley provided a quality start with eight innings pitched and allowed only three runs to lock up his third win of the season. Zac deRocco pitched a clean ninth for his first save of the season.

Fischer, Cardona, Otten, and Borup all tallied two hits in game two.

The Lions return to the diamond tomorrow for a make-up game against Montclair State at home. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
