GALLOWAY, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team knocked off the first place team in the NJAC in Stockton University on Wednesday night. The Lions (10-7, 7-3 NJAC) pulled out the big win by way of an 82-78 final score.
The Ospreys acquired a 21-10 lead in the first 11 minutes of action. TCNJ came back with a 14-0 run to go up 24-21.
Travis Jocelyn got the run going with a three-pointer. On the next possession,
Randall Walko threw down a dunk after taking a feed from
P.J. Ringel. Walko was fouled, then hit the free throw to pull the Lions within 21-15.
After
Ryan Jensen hit a lay-up,
Tommy Egan made a three-pointer to tie the game up at 21 apiece. Ringel drained a trifecta to put the Lions on top.
Walko knocked down a three-pointer with 2:15 to go in the first half to put TCNJ up 39-31. Jocelyn struck from downtown with 35 seconds to go in the opening half to give TCNJ a 44-38 edge, and the Lions took that six point lead into the break.
Jensen sank a triple to give TCNJ a 49-43 lead with 16:27 left to play in the game. Stockton was then able to fight back and gain a 65-60 lead with 8:46 to go.
The Lions went out in front with a 12-2 run to grab a 73-69 edge. Ringel came up with a steal on the defensive end, then found Walko in transition who converted on a lay-up. Walko continued to attack the Osprey defense, and scored an and-one to put the Lions up 70-67. After a pair of Stockton free throws, Jocelyn buried a three-pointer to give TCNJ a four point lead with 6:16 to play. He hit a jumper on the next trip down to put the Lions up by five.
The game went scoreless from the 4:39 mark to the 1:44 mark, with TCNJ clinging onto a three point lead. Jensen made a clutch jumper to give the Lions a 77-72 lead with 1:44 to play. Stockton cut it to one with a pair of free throws, but then Walko made a pair on the other end to keep TCNJ in front 79-76. TCNJ's defense got the crucial stop on the other end, and Jensen grabbed the rebound. He made his free throws, and the Lions were able to hang onto the big win.
Walko tied his career-high with 34 points. He shot 11-of-17 overall from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range, and 9-of-11 from the foul line. Jocelyn put up a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. Jensen also tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Ringel tallied seven assists and six rebounds on the evening.
TCNJ will return to action on Jan. 25, when the Lions will square off against Rutgers-Newark at home.
