Big Second Half and Jocelyn's Career-High Pushes Men's Hoops Past Rutgers-Newark

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team picked up a victory over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday by a final score of 74-46. TCNJ improved to 11-7 including 8-3 in conference play with the win. The Lions also pushed their home record to 6-1 on the year. TCNJ outscored Rutgers-Newark by a 47-18 margin in the second half to take home the win.

The first half was a back and forth battle, and Rutgers-Newark held a 28-27 lead at the end of the period. P.J. Ringel scored on a lay-in to tie it up 25-25 with 2:38 remaining. Ringel scored again from in close with less than a minute remaining to give TCNJ a two point advantage.

At the start of the second half, the Lions went on a 13-0 run to take a 40-31 lead. Travis Jocelyn struck from beyond the arc to put the Lions up 32-31. On the next possession, Jocelyn hit again from long range. The threes kept on coming for the Lions, and on the next trip down the floor Randall Walko hit from three-point land to extend the lead to 38-31.

A pair of free throws from Walko capped off the run and gave the Lions a 40-31 advantage. TCNJ continued to play efficient offense complimented by solid defense. Walko hit another trifecta to put TCNJ up 47-37, then Jocelyn hit on a lay-up.

The momentum remained in TCNJ's favor, and the Lions pulled away from the Scarlet Raiders. Danny Bodine knocked down a three-pointer to put the Lions ahead 54-37 with 6:44 to play. On the next possession, Ringel found Jocelyn down low who threw down a dunk. The Lions controlled the remainder of the game to coast to the win.

Jocelyn led the way with a career-high 25 points on very efficient shooting numbers. He went 10-for-14 from the field, and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Walko scored 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, and 3-of-5 from three-point land. Ringel grabbed eight boards to go with five assists and six points.

As a team the Lions were on fire from three-point range. TCNJ shot 13-of-25 from behind the arc on the afternoon.

The Lions will resume play at Rowan on Jan. 29.
