Men's Basketball Tops New Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team picked up a 62-55 win against New Jersey City University on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Lions improved to 7-6 on the year including 4-2 in NJAC play, while the Gothic Knights tripped to 5-8 and 2-4 in the conference.

The Lions led 26-17 at the end of a low scoring first half. The Gothic Knights made a three-pointer to tie the game up 10-10 with 11 minutes to play in the first half.

After that bucket, TCNJ went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. Danny Bodine sank a jumper, then Travis Jocelyn converted on a lay-up. Jocelyn would make three free throws to give TCNJ the seven point edge.

P.J. Ringel set up Randall Walko's three-pointer that put TCNJ up 22-15 with 4:47 left in the first. That duo would connect again, as Walko made another triple off of a Ringel feed to make it a 26-15 lead.

Early in the second half, Tommy Egan knocked down a three-pointer to put the Lions out in front by 15. The Lions then held the Gothic Knights scoreless for four and a half minutes to take a 20 point lead. Ryan Jensen struck from long distance to give the Lions a 40-26 lead with 15 minutes to play. A bucket from Walko pushed the lead to 44-26, then Jensen's lay-up put TCNJ up 20.

NJCU mounted a late comeback, and pulled to as close as 56-52 with two minutes to play. TCNJ did held NJCU right there, as four free throws from Walko and two from Jocelyn sealed the win.

Walko had another strong game for TCNJ, as he scored a game-high 27 points and shot 14-of-19 from the charity stripe. Jocelyn scored 14 points and shot 8-of-9 from the free throw line, while Jensen posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Ringel racked up eight assists on the night, while Bodine blocked three shots and grabbed five rebounds.

TCNJ played stout defense, as it limited NJCU to 20-of-69 (29%) shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers.

The Lions will resume play Saturday at Ramapo College for a 1:00 p.m. tip off.
