Women's Soccer Sweeps NJAC Weekly Awards

11/8/2021 1:19:00 PM

PITMAN, N.J. – After capturing its fourth consecutive NJAC championship over the weekend, the No. 1 TCNJ women's soccer team enjoyed a clean sweep of the conference's weekly awards.

Gianna Minerva (offensive player of the week), Alexandra Panasuk (defensive), and Ava Curtis (rookie) were rewarded for their starring roles in victories over Stockton and Rowan, the latter a physical slugfest in a championship match that needed 110 scoreless minutes and seven rounds of penalty kicks to decide.

Minerva helped the Lions reach the title game with the go-ahead goal in Tuesday night's semifinal against the Ospreys, who held the high-powered hosts down until Minerva found the breakthrough with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Curtis added an insurance tally in that matchup.

Curtis and Minerva both executed critical conversions in the nerve-wracking penalty shootout with Rowan in Friday night's title bout. The first-year standout stepped up the spot to lead off the fifth round with the Lions trailing, 3-2, knowing a miss would hand the trophy to the Profs. She calmly struck the ball into the back of the net, and Panasuk made a game-saving stop of her own on the ensuing Rowan attempt.

Minerva opened the sixth round with a make of her own, which proved monumental after the Profs answered with a score on their next attempt.

After Ivonne Vazquez put TCNJ ahead, 5-4, Panasuk dove to her left to punch away the seventh and final Rowan try and clinch the Lions' 20th NJAC title. The senior netminder, this year's NJAC goalkeeper of the year, made two saves in Friday's triumph before stopping three penalty kicks in the shootout, helping the Lions climb out of a 2-0 hole after two rounds.
