No. 13 Wrestling Completes Season Sweep of No. 11 Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. –
The no. 13 TCNJ wrestling team wrestled a familiar foe Wednesday evening, defeating no. 11 Stevens, 27-14. The win for the Lions is the second for the team over the Ducks in the last five days after TCNJ earned a 24-16 victory on Saturday. The Lions improved on their performance from the last dual, winning seven of 10 bouts.

"The team competed with grit and determination tonight," said head coach Joe Galante. " Each wrestler seemed to want to dominate their opponent. We were controlling ties, positions, and pressing to score points. I loved watching our guys compete tonight."
 
Thomas Marretta started the dual by taking a forfeit at heavyweight for the second-straight match giving TCNJ a 6-0 lead. Nick Denora followed by improving to 4-0 on the season, topping Andrew Finateri, 10-2, to push the lead to 10-0.
 
Galante made his first lineup change of the day at 133, calling on freshman Larry Melchionda. Melchionda fought hard before ultimately falling 8-0. The change allowed second-ranked Jake Giordano do move up to 141 pounds and face eighth-ranked Kyle Slendorn. Giordano paid off Galante's move, controlling the match and earning a victory that extended TCNJ's lead to 13-4.
 
The Lions made a second change to the lineup as TCNJ forfeited the match at 149 to Brett Kaliner. Robert Dinger moved up to 157 to face Nick Boggiano. Dinger struggled with the extra size of Boggiano, as Stevens briefly claimed a 14-13 lead.
 
Matthew Sacco would make sure the Ducks advantage would be short lived. Sacco faced a new opponent in Joe Schneider at 165. Sacco scored early and often to build a 6-2 lead after the first period. The sophomore held a six-point advantage late in the third period and made several shots to earn a bonus point, but settled for a 9-3 victory that put TCNJ back in front 16-14.
 
It what would be the most exciting match of the day, Reid Colella and Joel Martinovsky rematched at 174 pounds. Colella and Martinovsky ended regulation tied 2-2. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Colella chose bottom. Midway through the period, Colella earned a reversal and turned the position into a two-point near fall. He then rode out the final period to close out the win.
 
Thomas Anderson posted his second-straight dominating performance. Anderson did not allow a point, cruising to a 16-0 technical fall late in the third period.
 
In the final bout of the dual, fifth-ranked Quinn Haddad earned revenge over third-ranked Michael Dooley. Following a scoreless first period, Haddad chose bottom for the second period and earned his escape point. Dooley chose bottom to begin the third. Twice Dooley appeared to break the grip of Haddad, but the match moved out of bounds and was reset. Haddad rode out the final period to earn the 1-0 decision victory and produce the final score.

"It felt great to that one back," said Haddad. "I'm happy the team got the win and I'm looking forward to finishing strong on Saturday."

"Giordano and Haddad stepped up to knock off ranked opponents," said Galante. "They had fun, wrestled hard, and executed their game plans nearly flawlessly."
 
In extra countable matches, Thomas Dinger needed just 52 seconds to pin his opponent at 141 pounds. Nick Golden controlled his match at 165, claiming an 11-0 victory.
 
The Lions will close out the 2020-21 regular season when they host Castleton on Saturday at noon.
