No. 13 Wrestling Closes Out Season Against Castleton

2/20/2021 5:49:00 PM

EWING, N.J. – The no. 13 TCNJ wrestling team closed out the 2020-21 season, falling, 21-17, to Castleton on Saturday afternoon. The match was the lone blemish on the year for the Lions, who fell to 3-1, while the Spartans remained unbeaten at 4-0.

Castleton jumped out to an early lead with wins at 125 and 133. Domenic Difrancescantonio got the Lions on the board with a 5-2 victory.

Robert Dinger gave TCNJ what would ultimately be its final lead of the day at 149. Holding a large lead in the second period, Dinger turned his opponent for what would have earned a technical fall and he continued the position to earn the pin, the 24th of his career. The pin put TCNJ on top, 9-8.

Following wins by Castleton at 157 and 165, Reid Colella recorded takedowns in both the first and second period on his way to a 5-2 victory. The win cut the Lions' deficit to 15-12. Castleton would quickly respond with a victory at 184 to push the lead back to six.

Quinn Haddad scored early and often at 197 for TCNJ. Haddad earned several back points and led 10-0 after the first period. Haddad ended the match up 14-0 and the riding time point made the match a technical fall, setting up a winner-take-all match at heavyweight.

Dylan D'Amore fell behind, 2-0, after an early takedown, but fought back and held a 6-5 advantage midway through the third period. With less than 30 seconds remaining, Chance LaPier secured a takedown to flip the match in his favor and secure the upset win for the Spartans.

The Lions were very successful in extra countable matches, taking nine of 11 bouts. Jacob Falleni led the way for TCNJ in those bouts, pinning both of his opponents.

The dual closes out the season for the Lions after the announcement of the cancellation of the NCAA Championships by the organization.
