EWING, N.J. – A career-high 43-point offensive outburst from
Travis Jocelyn helped propel the TCNJ men's basketball team to its second win in as many days on Saturday. The Lions knocked off Stockton by a final score of 84-75 to sweep the weekend series.
Jocelyn became the first player in all of Division III to reach the 40-point plateau this season. The 43 points are only nine shy of former Lion and NBA player Greg Grant's single game program record of 52 points.
The Lions (2-0, 2-0 NJAC) held a 66-55 lead with over nine minutes to play in the game, then Stockton cut the lead to two with seven and a half to play. Seven points from Jocelyn bumped the TCNJ edge back up to nine. He converted a lay-up, was fouled, then hit the free throw for a three-point play. On the next possession, he hit a three-pointer off of a
Brandon Slaybaugh assist to push TCNJ ahead, 74-65.
The back-and-forth battle continued down the home stretch, and the Ospreys kept coming at the Lions. A three-pointer from Stockton's D.J. Campbell shrank the TCNJ lead to 79-75 with only 1:22 remaining.
With less than a minute to go,
Jason Larranaga delivered the dagger with a three-pointer to push TCNJ up, 82-75. Larranaga was set up by
P.J. Ringel, then Ringel came up big on the defensive end with a blocked shot.
Danny Bodine followed that up with a block of his own, and a pair of Jocelyn free throws put the game away with 30 seconds.
For the second night in a row, TCNJ came out of the gate fast. Stockton held a quick, 7-4 lead, but it was erased by a 15-2 run from the Lions. Ringel converted a lay-up, then
Anthony DiCaro sank a three-pointer. Jocelyn recorded the next five points with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to put TCNJ ahead, 19-9, with 12:21 left in the first half. Stockton closed the half on a run to take a 37-35 lead into halftime.
Jocelyn's 43 points are the most scored by a Lion since at least the 2004-05 season. He made it a double-double with 11 rebounds. The senior forward shot an efficient 12-of-24 from the field, 7-of-14 from three-point range, and 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Â Â
Ringel scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out eight assists. He also registered three steals on the defensive end. DiCaro tallied 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point territory.
As a team, the Lions shot an efficient 19-of-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line. TCNJ's active defense forced 19 turnovers which translated to 24 points on the offensive end.
Next up for TCNJ is an away game against Rutgers-Camden on Feb. 12.
