EWING, N.J. – The No. 8 TCNJ lacrosse team turned a nationally ranked battle into a mercy-rule run-away on Tuesday, surging past 24
th-ranked Haverford and on to an 18-6 victory with a dominant second half.
Ally Tobler scored five goals and added an assist and
Jennifer LaRocca matched her with point tally with three goals and three helpers for the Lions (4-0), who posted their fourth consecutive double-digit margin of victory to open the season.
Anna Devlin put her stamp all over the contest, scoring four goals and racking up 11 draw controls, while
Jillian Westerby netted a hat-trick with three goals and one assist.
The final spread could have been much more lopsided if not for Haverford goalie Sarah Cahn, who racked up 20 saves – including 13 in the first half. TCNJ outshot the previously unbeaten Fords, 45-9, and corralled 22 of the game's 27 draws.
LaRocca set up Devlin for the opening goal just 43 seconds after opening draw, and it appeared another rout was on. Haverford had other ideas, at least early on, taking a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter.
Tobler tied the game at the 4:18 mark, and Westerby and Wright netted goals just 23 seconds apart to make it 4-2 with 2:04 left in the frame.
Roma Hlacky pulled the Fords (4-1) within 4-3 early in the second stanza, but Tobler's third goal of the afternoon ignited a four-goal run that put the Lions firmly in command. Westerby, LaRocca, and Tobler all ripped the back of the net during the spurt.
TCNJ showed off its relentless attacking talent and depth in the third quarter, when six different players got on the scoresheet. After LaRocca and Westerby potted goals 29 seconds apart to make it 11-4, Katharine Naiburg scored her first goal of the season at the 5:34 mark. Wright scored a quick-strike marker on a jaw-dropping transition feed from Devlin 16 seconds later, and Devlin then brought on a running clock with 4:06 remaining in the period.
Haverford pulled two goals back to start the fourth quarter, but the pendulum quickly swung back to the Lions as Tobler and Wright scored in a 25-second span to restore a 10-goal advantage (16-6) with 5:21 to play. Tobler capped her five-goal day with 3:15 to play before LaRocca finished the scoring at the 25-second mark.
Devlin registered double-digit draw controls for the second game in a row after compiling 10 in last week's win at Cabrini.
Sabrina Phillips had five draws and Westerby added four.
Phillips also joined
Madison Wernik with four caused turnovers apiece at the head of a tremendous defensive effort that permitted only nine total shots. Wernik led TCNJ with four ground balls, while
Wayden Ay collected three.
The Lions return to their home turf on Friday to take on Claremont-Mudd Scripps. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
