LaRocca's Historic Day Leads Lacrosse Past C-M-S

EWING, N.J. – Jennifer LaRocca tied a program record and reached a major milestone in one fell swoop, driving the No. 8 TCNJ lacrosse team to a 24-5 rout of visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a historic offensive performance.

LaRocca matched the school record with 13 points, pairing five goals with a career-high eight assists to pull even with Leigh Mitchell's three-goal, ten-assist effort against Ramapo in 2012 as stand-alone performances in the storied history of TCNJ women's lacrosse.

Ally Tobler finished with five goals and an assist, Larissa Hatzold added four goals, and Anna Devlin coupled three goals with three helpers to pace the red-hot Lions (5-0) to their fifth consecutive double-digit margin of victory to open the season.

TCNJ trailed 2-1 early to the Athenas (5-3), who played at No. 11 Wesleyan on Wednesday on their "reverse spring break" trip to the East Coast. Tobler, however, had a hand in the game's next five goals, and the Lions were off and running.

After giving TCNJ the lead for good with a high free-position goal, Tobler scored in close on a feed from LaRocca to make it 4-2 before setting up Hatzold for a quick finish at the left post.

After a goal by C-M-S, Tobler deflected a pass on an Athenas clearing attempt, and Hatzold picked up the ground ball and went in alone on goal for a 6-3 lead.

C-M-S cut the margin to two again, but that was as good as it got for the visitors from southern California. LaRocca weaved through the defense and fired a rocket into the top-right corner of the cage before capping the first-quarter scoring with a shot-fake that allowed her to maneuver in close for a lefty effort that made it 8-4 with 1:01 left in the period.

LaRocca kicked off the second quarter with back-to-back assists to Veronika O'Donnell, who scored on nearly identical plays as she cut to the middle, took a pass from LaRocca, and fired home. Natalie Berry increased the margin to 11-4 at the 11-minute mark, cutting in from outside the circle and beating the keeper.

C-M-S scored its final goal of the contest 37 seconds later, with the Lions defense pitching a shutout for the final 40 minutes and change. Ten different players registered a caused turnover, led by two from Kileigh Pfluger.

Hatzold sealed her hat-trick with an odd goal at the 8:57 mark, sending a shot off the post and the Athenas goalie before it trickled over the line and in. Less than a minute later, Devlin intercepted a clearing pass from the C-M-S goalie and fed ahead to a cutting Tobler for an easy finish.

Jillian Westerby brought on the running clock with a free-position goal just past the midway point of the second quarter. TCNJ expanded its lead on another turnover when LaRocca picked off an errant pass and scored into an empty net with the Athenas keeper scrambling to get back. Hatzold polished off a 17-5 halftime margin in the final minute of the period.

After Devlin scored on a fake to open the second-half scoring, Tobler leapt high to receive a pass, turned, and scooped a lefty shot into the back of the cage for a highlight-reel goal. LaRocca made it 20-5 at the 7:02 mark with an impressive transition tally before Emily Ingram netted her first goal of the season.

TCNJ added a fifth third-quarter goal as Berry scooped the ball off a turnover at midfield and fed upfield to LaRocca, who set up a cutting Wright to make it 22-5 with 39 seconds left in the stanza.

Wayden Ay scored her third career goal early in the fourth quarter, using a lightning-quick swim move to get free for a shot.

LaRocca put the icing on the cake, and equaled the single-game scoring record, on her fifth goal of the game with 3:49 to go.

Tobler scored at least five goals for the fourth game in a row to take her team-leading tally to 24, while Hatzold's four goals marked a career high. Devlin equaled her season best with six points and produced a game-high six draw controls, one more than Westerby and Sabrina Phillips. Tobler tallied three draws for the Lions, who held a 19-12 edge in that category.

TCNJ outshot the Athenas, 39-11, and was again ruthlessly efficient, putting 33 of those efforts on target. The Lions were a perfect 16-for-16 on clears and committed only eight turnovers. Madison Wernik led the home side with four ground balls.

Julia Charest played the first three quarters in goal before giving way to Hailey Wexler, who made three saves in shutting out the Athenas in the fourth.

The lacrosse team heads to Moravian on Tuesday.
