Wain Concludes Career at NCAA Singles Championship

5/27/2022 12:38:00 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. – Justin Wain concluded his standout career with a first-round loss in the NCAA Division III singles championship on Friday morning at the USTA National Campus.

Making his first career NCAA individual appearance, Wain fell by a 6-4, 6-2 count to Tufts' Isaac Gorelik. The Jumbos senior, who reached the round of 16 a year ago, improved his season record to 26-7 and set up a meeting with top-seeded Christian Alshon of Chicago in the second round.

Wain was saddled with a daunting draw, going against a veteran who played No. 1 singles for a Tufts squad that made it all the way to the NCAA semifinals. Gorelik spent much of his senior campaign in the national singles rankings, but the Lions' senior was more than up to the challenge early in the match.

Wain broke Gorelik twice in the first set, including to get back on serve at 4 games apiece after the TCNJ star had just been broken himself, but Gorelik broke back immediately for 5-4 and was able to serve out the first set.

After fighting off multiple break points to hold serve in the opening game of the second set, Wain took a 0-30 lead in the ensuing game. Gorelik, however, reeled off the next four points before breaking for a 2-1 edge. Wain held for 2-3 but was broken serving at 2-4 and Gorelik succeeded in serving out the match.

Wain finished 16-3 in singles, with two of those losses coming to fellow NCAA qualifiers. He was 12-5 in doubles with Matthew Michibata. The 2022 NJAC Player of the Year, Wain was a three-time All-NJAC performer in singles and a two-time All-NJAC honoree in doubles.
