EWING, N.J. – The No. 19 TCNJ field hockey team completed a valiant 2-1 comeback victory over No. 11 Kean at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (8-3, 2-0 NJAC) utilized a go-ahead score from junior
Bella DiNardo and a career game at goalie from sophomore
Brigitte Racey to race past the Cougars (7-3, 1-1 NJAC) and secure their fifth straight win and second ranked NJAC victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kean struck first in the eighth minute of the first period on a penalty corner after Peyton Mann found Morgan Stump for the shoot and score.
- The Lions responded with the equalizer 4:19 into the second quarter on a Rayhanah Ahmed penalty stroke. Ahmed received the stroke after being tripped by a Cougars defender well within the shooting circle while receiving a pass for a clear shot attempt.
- With the road team looking to retake the lead, Racey held off numerous high quality looks from the Cougars offense by recording five saves in the final four minutes of the quarter to keep the game tied heading into halftime.
- 10 minutes into the second half, DiNardo capitalized on a Lions penalty corner by bouncing in the go-ahead score past a scrum of Kean defenders and into the back left corner of the cage. The junior was assisted by Ahmed.
- With four minutes left in the fourth, Kean had a final chance at tying the match and forcing overtime on a Laura Stump shot attempt off a penalty corner. However a clutch deflection from Racey erased the equalizer and allowed the Lions backline to clear the ball out. TCNJ would go on to close out the game solely on the offensive by controlling the ball extensively on the Kean side of the field.
