EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's lacrosse team put together its most complete performance of the season on Saturday, leading by as many as nine goals before settling on a convincing 16-9 victory over No. 18 Roanoke.
Anna Devlin broke her own program record with 14 draw controls and paired two goals with two assists for the Lions (6-0), who beat a ranked foe for the second time in as many outings and handed the previously soaring Maroons their first loss of the year.
Ally Tobler and
Anna Wright each racked up a four-goal, one-assist afternoon and
Katherine Naiburg matched them with five points on three goals and two helpers.
TCNJ was all over the Maroons in the early going, and the pressure paid off as Devlin potted the opening goal with an unassisted tally just over five minutes in.
After Roanoke equalized each of the Lions' first two goals, TCNJ started to separate with a pair of goals a minute apart as
Natalie Berry split the defense and scored and Wright drew a foul before ripping the ensuing free-position attempt past Maroons goalie Kyleigh Chickering stick side.
The visitors pulled one back to close within 4-3 after one, the Lions began to assert their dominance. It started with a run of three straight goals in a span of less than two minutes, with
Jillian Westerby finding Tobler in front of the net for a quick shot and a 5-3 lead. Wright then blasted another free-position rocket into the right side of the net before a save by
Julia Charest on a Roanoke eight-meter effort ignited a transition chance that ended with a pinpoint pass from
Morgan Vaccaro to Wright streaking down the left wing for a highlight-reel goal that extended the margin to 7-3 at the 8:12 mark.
The Lions' lead swelled to five on a pair of goals by Tobler 52 seconds apart, the first on a feed from
Anna Devlin and the second on a transition toss from
Wayden Ay with 3:44 on the clock. Roanoke grabbed one before the break, trimming TCNJ's margin to 9-5 at intermission.
TCNJ put it away in the third quarter, starting with a pass from Devlin to Naiburg in front for an open shot and a 10-5 advantage. After an extended offensive possession, Naiburg returned the favor with a nice feed to Tobler for a top-shelf shot.
After Roanoke got within 11-6, Wright got a shot to trickle over the line, and Naiburg found the back of the net again about a minute later. Naiburg polished off her hat trick late in the third on an assist from Wright, and Devlin notched her second goal of the day to expand the spread to 15-6 with 10:53 to play.
The Maroons avoided the running clock with three scores in a row, but
Sydney Sieja converted a free-position chance to cap the scoring with 1:38 remaining.
Devlin's draws eclipsed her previous standard of 12, set last year in a win over Rowan.
Sabrina Phillips corralled the other seven, giving the Lions a 21-8 surplus in that category.
TCNJ was lethal offensively, scoring on 16 of its 30 shots and assisting on 10 of their goals.
Ay,
Kaitlyn Birnbohm-Kaminski, Devlin, and
Madison Wernik all had two caused turnovers in front of Charest, who finished with nine saves. That unit helped slow a Roanoke squad that came in averaging more than 16 goals per game and having outscored its opponents, 97-26.
The Lions continue their six-game homestand with two more contests next week, beginning with Moravian on Tuesday; top-ranked Middlebury comes to town on Thursday.
