Lacrosse Cruises Past Cabrini With Big Second Half

EWING, N.J. – A third-quarter scoring spree separated the No. 3 TCNJ women's lacrosse team from visiting Cabrini in an 18-7 non-conference victory on Wednesday.

Anna Devlin scored four goals and added three assists and Katherine Naiburg produced her second four-goal effort in as many outings for the Lions (3-0), who kicked off an extended six-game home stand in style.

Natalie Berry put up a career-high six points – all in the second half – on two goals and four assists, Ally Tobler picked up another hat-trick with three goals, and Wayden Ay paired two goals with two assists as part of a huge all-around performance.

Naiburg started the scoring just over two minutes in, finishing a feed from Devlin to get the Lions' offense untracked. Devlin set up another goal just 90 seconds later as Tobler ripped the back of the net.

Tobler played facilitator on the next marker, lobbing a pass over the top to Ay in front for a shot that rattled off the post and in. Exactly a minute later, Jillian Westerby plugged the low corner of the net on a free-position effort to make it 4-0 with 3:32 to go in the frame.

Cabrini got on the board on a goal by Olivia Little, but the Lions netted two more before the end of the quarter as Devlin took a beautiful feed from Morgan Vaccaro and sent a lefty snap shot past her high school teammate Abbey Fenton for her first of the afternoon. TCNJ capped the outburst with a trademark transition goal as Tobler picked up a loose ball and passed ahead, the ball ultimately winding up in the stick of Sydney Sieja wide open in front of the net to make it 6-1 with 25 ticks remaining.

TCNJ was ruthless in the first quarter, scoring on six of its 10 total shots in the opening frame and getting goals from six different players. Cabrini committed nine turnovers, and all but two were forced by pressure from the Lions' relentless defense.

The Cavaliers found their footing in the second quarter and got within 6-3, but TCNJ restored order with a pair of goals in 31 seconds. Ay scored on a free-position effort, working her way around the goalie and shoveling into an open net for her second of the day, and the senior then hit a cutting Naiburg for a quick-strike effort that hit the back of the cage to make it 8-3. Cabrini pulled one back before the break, trimming the margin to four.

The Lions put the game to bed with a big run out of intermission, scoring five unanswered goals in a span of less than five minutes. Naiburg scored in front to open the third-quarter spree, and Tobler took a pass at midfield and went all the way to the cage for another one. Naiburg ripped the netting on a free-position rocket as the shot clock expired, and goals from Devlin and Berry expanded the spread to 13-4 just shy of the midway point of the stanza.

After the Cavaliers broke up the spurt, Berry scored on an assist from Ay, then set up another goal from Devlin in transition to open up a double-digit margin (15-5) at the 4:18 mark. Tobler added another for good measure in the waning seconds, another transition strike on the first assist of the season by Emily Ingram.

Anna Wright and Devlin potted fourth-quarter goals to cap the TCNJ scoring.

TCNJ held a 42-19 advantage in shots, including a massive 17-1 discrepancy in the third quarter.

Westerby was dominant in the draw circle, creating plenty of opportunities for Tobler to collect eight draw controls, with Devlin adding five of her own.

Ay was a force all over the field, piling up seven ground balls and matching Larissa Hatzold, Madison Wernik, and Westerby with a pair of caused turnovers.

Devlin and Tobler are both on the cusp of major milestones - Tobler is one shy of 100 career goals, and Devlin's next point will be her 100th.

Julia Charest registered five saves before giving way to Hailey Wexler, who stopped three shots in the final 11:46 of game time.

The Lions play host to Farmingdale State on Saturday.
