SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 4 TCNJ women's lacrosse team made a late push at No. 5 Salisbury on Saturday afternoon, but the comeback fell just short as the Sea Gulls held off the Lions, 11-9. TCNJ held Salisbury without a goal in the fourth quarter.
After Salisbury jumped ahead 9-1 at halftime, the Lions outscored Salisbury, 8-2, in the second half. In the third quarter, Jillian Westerby scored twice after Anna Devlin scored in the first minute of the period. Ally Tobler scored with just 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter to cut the TCNJ deficit to 11-5.
The TCNJ defense held Salisbury scoreless in the fourth quarter as the Lions tallied four more goals. Wayden Ay and Anna Wright each scored twice in the quarter, but the Lions' offense didn't net their first goal of the quarter until the six-minute mark. Ay also assisted on one of Wright's goals in the quarter.
Westerby led the team with three goals, and she scored TCNJ's lone goal in the first half.
Four Lions had two ground balls apiece, and Anna Devlin and Sabrina Phillips each had a pair of draw controls. Phillips also causes two turnovers.
Hailey Wexler made six saves in relief in the second half.
The Lions move back into conference play in their final regular season game of the season next Saturday at Ramapo. It's set for a 1 p.m. start time.
