EWING, N.J. – Isabel Maher scored a pair of goals and a collective defensive effort made them stand up as the TCNJ field hockey team picked up a 2-0 home victory over Arcadia in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
Maher scored 2:36 into the contest and added an insurance marker midway through the fourth for the Lions (5-4), who notched their second consecutive shutout behind a three-save performance from
Brigitte Racey.
TCNJ nearly scored seconds after the opening whistle as
Prisha Dhruve found herself behind the defense but saw her shot deflected onto the post by the Knights keeper.
It didn't take long for the Lions to get on the board after that. Following a corner insert by Dhruve,
Claire Engebreth sent a pass across the circle to
Rachael Tetzlaff; the rookie dropped a pass in front of the cage for Maher, who beat the goalie low and to the right to give the hosts a quick lead.
Despite comfortable advantages in shots, the Lions had to hold on to that margin for most of the afternoon. The Knights (4-6) nearly equalized six minutes into the third, but Racey came out to deny a breakaway and added another save off a corner about a minute later.
TCNJ found breathing room with 7:53 remaining as a flurry of close-range shots eventually resulted in a rebound goal for Maher.
