NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Some of the most accomplished players in program history etched their names permanently into TCNJ football lore with record-breaking performances in Friday night's season finale at Christopher Newport.
The Captains (7-3, 5-1) rolled up 458 yards of rushing offense in a 70-31 victory, but not before several Lions veterans established new high-water marks on the offensive side of the ball.
Fifth-year quarterback
Trevor Bopp threw three touchdown passes, moving him past Flip Faherty (1982-83) and into the top spot on the all-time list with 50.
Seventeen of Bopp's completions went to fifth-year counterpart
Malin Jasinski, who capped off a legendary campaign in style. The 17 receptions, believed to be a school record and good for 194 yards, gave him 169 for his career and put Jasinski ahead of John Aromando '85 for the career record. Jasinski finished the season with 99 receptions for 1378 yards, both easily the best in program history, and ended his career second in receiving yards with 2,053.
Jayson Schmidt, meanwhile carried 28 times for 138 yards and a touchdown, his school-record 13
th of the season.
Fifth-year tight end
Thomas Burke had seven catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns, vaulting into fifth in career receiving yards (1,763) and giving him 15 career TD receptions.
The four touchdowns scored by the Lions gave freshman kicker
Tim Willever the ammunition to establish a new single-season record for extra points made with 38.
CNU scored on its opening drive and never looked back, going up 35-3 at halftime and locking up a runner-up finish to Salisbury in the NJAC standings.
