EWING, N.J. – The No. 10 TCNJ women's lacrosse team couldn't keep up with No. 6 Gettysburg on Wednesday, conceding a 19-6 decision on its waterlogged home turf.
Ally Tobler scored three goals for the Lions, who were within 5-3 late in the first quarter before the Bullets went on a 10-1 run to pull away.
FOR THE RECORD
- Gettysburg – national runner-up a year ago – improved to 7-2 with its fourth win over a ranked opponent, while the Lions dropped to 5-2 and are now 0-2 against ranked foes
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams, both Final Four participants in 2022, traded early goals, with CJ Kole scoring a free-position shot to answer Julia Daly's lid-lifter
- The Bullets then ran off four consecutive goals before TCNJ regained its footing as Tobler tallied back-to-back markers – the first a stunning individual display in which she weaved through defenders over more than half the field before sending a laser into the back of the net – to get the hosts within 5-3 at the 4:50 mark of the first
- Gettysburg, however, scored on its next two shots to go up 7-3 after one and tacked on four more in the first four minutes of the second period to stretch the margin to 11-3 before Kira Sides stemmed the tide with a rebound goal
- The Bullets netted a woman-down goal to take a 12-4 lead into half, then scored three in a row to open the third quarter and start a running clock
- TCNJ twice got within 10, the last on a goal by Tobler with 13:07 to play, but Daly poured in three more goals before the final buzzer
FOR THE FOES
- Daly dominated, scoring seven goals – on seven shots – and adding an assist
- Jordan Basso paired three goals with three assists, while Caroline Sullivan and Emily Crane each had three goals and one assist
- Julie Breedveld finished with two goals and two assists
- Lily Macatee totaled six draw controls
STANDOUT LIONS
- Tobler netted another hat-trick with her trio of goals, including scoring on both of her free-position attempts, and led the Lions with five draw controls
- Kaitlyn Birnbohm-Kaminski notched three caused turnovers and three ground balls
- Hailey Wexler replaced Julia Charest after one quarter and finished with six saves
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gettysburg outshot the Lions, 30-12, and put 25 of those shots on frame
- The Bullets held a slim edge in the draw circle (14-12) and each team had 12 ground balls
- Gettysburg committed only 11 turnovers – just six in the first three quarters – to TCNJ's 17
