Lacrosse Defeated by W&L in Latest Top-10 Showdown

SPARKS GLENCOE, Md. – The No. 10 TCNJ lacrosse team once again contended with downpours and a fellow top-10 opponent on Saturday, suffering a 16-9 defeat to No. 7 Washington and Lee at US Lacrosse Headquarters.

Playing in the rain for the second time in as many games, the Lions saw their losing streak reach three games – all against opponents ranked among the top-7 in Division III. Ally Tobler scored four goals to lead TCNJ.

FOR THE RECORD
  • TCNJ dropped to 5-3 overall, while the surging Generals improved to 9-3 with their eighth straight victory and their fourth this season against a nationally ranked team
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals poured it on early, netting three goals in a span of just over 90 seconds as part of a 5-0 first-quarter start
  • Tobler halted the run with back-to-back goals in the opening frame, but W&L started the second stanza just like the first, with a 5-0 spurt to go ahead 10-2 before Morgan Vaccaro's goal with 10 seconds left in the first half
  • The teams traded goals in the third period, and Kira Sides deposited consecutive tallies to get the Lions within 12-6 after three quarters
  • W&L, however, responded with three goals in a row to go up by as many as nine (15-6)
  • Tobler netted a woman-goal with 8:28 left, and CJ Kole scored twice in the next minute and change to get back within six at 15-9
  • The Generals tacked on one last goal with 1:46 left for the final margin
FOR THE FOES
  • Alex Petras (2G/2A), Hanna Bishop (2G/2A), and Sophie Edwards (3G/1A) led a balanced attack for W&L, which had nine players record at least two points
  • Libby Ford had six ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Eugenie Rovegno notched a game-high six draw controls
  • Caroline Kranich made four saves
STANDOUT LIONS
  • Tobler paced the pride again with her fifth straight hat-trick and seventh in eight games
  • Kole registered her fourth multi-goal game of the season
  • Sides and Tobler had three draw controls apiece, and Sides matched Emily Potenza, Sydney Sieja, and Madison Wernik for the team lead with two caused turnovers
  • Julia Charest racked up 13 saves, her second double-figure effort of the year
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • W&L outshot the Lions, 40-18, and had a 17-11 edge in draw controls
  • TCNJ committed 23 turnovers to the Generals' 18, and eight came on clearing attempts
UP NEXT
  • The Lions get a break from top-10 competition when they head to Cabrini on Tuesday for their final matchup with the Cavaliers
