MADISON, N.J. – TCNJ men's tennis standouts Brett Schuster and Alberto Thomas consolidated an upset with an equally impressive follow-up win to advance to the quarterfinals of championship doubles at the ITA Northeast Regional on Friday.
 
Schuster and Thomas started the tournament with a bang, taking down the third-seeded unit from RIT to advance to the second round. They were tied 3-3 there before pulling away, reeling off five straight games to convincingly punch their ticket to the quarterfinals.
 
Schuster and Thomas will meet Hobart's Nicholas Fischer and Nick Grosso with a spot in the semifinals on the line; should they win two more matches tomorrow, the Lions' tandem will advance to the championship match and book their trip to next month's ITA Cup.
 
Harrison Maitland-Carter and Asa Wong nearly joined them in the quarters, but fell on the short end of a thrilling match with Hamilton's No. 1 pairing that needed to move indoors due to darkness for a decisive tiebreaker. Maitland-Carter and Wong took care of a tough team from RPI in the first round.
 
Nathan Chan and Aidan Twamley also won a first-round doubles match, downing a team from Drew before running into the top seed from RPI in the second round.
 
Maitland-Carter, Schuster, and Thomas all won first-round matches in the championship singles bracket, but none were able to make it to the Round of 16.
 
Sidd Arudi and Twamley made their regional debuts in singles, each falling in the first round.
