SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Three TCNJ men's tennis players won their two singles matches to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Northeast Regional on Friday.
Alberto Thomas triumphed in his first-round matchup against Union's Arhan Gupta, 6-1, 6-4. The senior then cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in his second-round match against Skidmore College's Nika Mori.
Fellow senior
Harrison Maitland-Carter started his day by defeating Zakaria Ahmed of Farmingdale State in his first-round match, 6-4, 6-0. In the second round, Maitland-Carter took down Oneonta's Chris Chippari, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16.
Nathan Chan, who made his regional singles debut on Friday, was the third Lion to advance to the singles round of 16. Chan's first round match was a nail-biting three-set match, as the TCNJ junior prevailed over Hobart's Nicholas Fischer, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 12-10. Chan was then able to move past Ithaca's Carlos Hernandez in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Also competing in the main singles draw for the Lions were
Aidan Twamley and
Faris Shehata, but they were not able to make it past their respective first-round opponents. TCNJ also had two teams competing in the doubles bracket, with Chan partnering with
Sidd Arudi and Maitland-Carter with
Asa Wong. Unfortunately, both teams bowed out in the first round.
Finally, two TCNJ teams also featured in the doubles B draw. The first team,
Curt Gruber and
Olufela Fieulleteau, were defeated by a duo from Union College. The second team,
Ethan D'Souza and
Brett Schuster, won their first-round match against a team from Baruch before losing in the next round against a team from Hobart.
Thomas, Maitland-Carter, and Chan will all compete in the regional singles round of 16 in the second day of regionals on Saturday, October 4.
