PITMAN, N.J. – A half-dozen TCNJ standouts received NJAC weekly awards on Monday afternoon.
The women's track and field team swept the weekly accolades behind
Eliza Bruncaj (Track Athlete of the Week),
Kerri McCarthy (Field Athlete of the Week), and
Brenna Omert (Rookie of the Week), while women's lacrosse fifth-year stars
Julia Charest (Defensive POTW) and
Ally Tobler (Offensive POTW) also grabbed top honors. Women's tennis first-year
Gabrielle Brideau completed the six-pack of recipients.
Bruncaj elevated to 21st in the nation with a time of 1:02.93 in the 400-meter hurdles, and also posted the second-fastest time in the NJAC in the 100-meter hurdles (15.09, 71st in Division III) as TCNJ hosted the Lions Invitational over the weekend. Bruncaj is now a 15-time NJAC weekly winner for her career, including six Track Athlete of the Week nods.
McCarthy received her second career weekly award after she uncorked the second-best hammer throw in the NJAC this season, posting a mark of 50.93 meters to move into 28th on the Division III national performance list. She also notched a new season-best in the discus (29.35m).
Omert ran a 2:17.11 in the 800 meters, the fastest by a freshman in the NJAC and sixth-fastest overall. Her time, which places her inside the top-100 nationally, was also an AARTFC qualifier.
Tobler had one of her best weeks as she racked up eight goals, five assists, five ground balls, four caused turnovers, and 10 draw controls in resounding wins over NJAC opponents Stockton and Rowan, helping TCNJ to secure the conference's regular-season championship. The fifth-year had five goals, three assists, and six draw controls in a 16-5 win at Stockton on Wednesday before supplying three goals, two assists, and four draws in Saturday's 15-7 victory over No. 23 Rowan. Tobler leads the Lions in goals (69), caused turnovers (22), and draw controls (102) and tops the conference in goals, goals per game, draw controls, and draw controls per game. She is a 9-time Offensive Player of the Week, including five such honors this spring.
Charest had an outstanding game against rival Rowan to help TCNJ earn the NJAC regular-season championship, racking up a career-high 18 saves as the Lions won, 15-7. Charest's 18 saves surpassed her previous career best of 15, accomplished a handful of times over the years, and helped neutralize the Profs' 36-23 advantage in shots. Charest posted a dazzling .720 save percentage for the day and is a 6-time NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for her career.
Brideau dominated her matches against Kean in the NJAC semifinals, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 double-bagel at No. 6 singles and teaming with
Aira Abalos for a 6-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles. In the NJAC championship against Stockton, she and Abalos led their doubles match, 5-2, when the clinching point took place.
