EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team welcomed Ithaca and NYU to campus this weekend for their annual Lions Tournament, where the teams battled in a competitive three-day affair. The Lions were in action on Friday and Sunday.
On the first day of competition, the Lions went up against Ithaca. The day began with doubles, where the pair of
Nathan Chan and
Sidd Arudi logged the Lions first win of the tournament.
Ethan D'Souza and
Tomas Velez added one more doubles victory for the Lions in the next match. Finally, the team of
Max Loia and
Mateus De Vasconcellos closed out doubles play against the Bombers on a positive note with a win.
In singles,
Harrison Maitland-Carter picked up a win, as well as Chan,
Aidan Twamley,
Faris Shehata,
Logan Knasiak, and
Olufela Fieulleteau. After the 18 total matches were completed on Friday, both TCNJ and Ithaca had 9 wins and 9 losses.
On Sunday, the Lions faced off against NYU, where TCNJ logged an 8-5 overall record. Maitland-Carter and partner
Asa Wong opened the day with a doubles win. The Lions then dropped the next match, but won the remaining two matches via Chan and Arudi as well as D'Souza and Velez. The Lions held a slight edge over the Violets in singles play, logging 5 wins to NYU's 4. Maitland-Carter, Chan, Twamley, Shehata, and Fieulleteau each won their respective matchups.
Chan went a perfect 4-0 across his two doubles and two singles matches. Also going undefeated for the Lions was D'Souza, who won both of his doubles matches over the weekend.
Next up for the Lions is the ITA Northeast Regional from October 4 to October 6, in Saratoga Springs, New York.
