SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The TCNJ women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the ITA Northeast Regional championship on Friday at Skidmore.
Zoey Albert and
Shruti Mannan won two matches on Thursday evening to advance to the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw, ultimately falling just short of a semifinal bid with a hard-fought loss in a tiebreaker on Friday morning.
Gabriella Robinson and
Elizabeth Ring made the second round of the championship doubles bracket, while Mannan was the lone Lion to win a match in the singles competition.
Albert and Mannan got through their first-round opponents, a strong tandem from RPI, by a count of 8-4. That set up a second-round showdown with a team from Rochester that had won its opening round match, 8-0, and the matchup did not disappoint. With neither side able to break through, the pro set went to a tiebreak at 7 games all, and Albert and Mannan had just enough to hang on for a 7-5 decision that sent them into the quarterfinals.
Albert and Mannan opened play Friday with another tiebreaker, this time against No. 4 seed Madison Kirby and Elliotte Banziger of Vassar. With a semifinal spot on the line, Albert and Mannan came up just short in an 8-7 (1) nail-biter.
Robinson and Ring swept past their first-round opponents from SUNY Geneseo, cruising into the second round with an 8-0 shutout. They had their hands full with No. 8 seed Vera Bondarenko and Victoria Wang from NYU, and succumbed to an 8-3 defeat.
Ella Brown and
Gabrielle Brideau drew a difficult first-round opponent, a No. 8 seed from Hamilton, and dropped out of the bracket with an 8-3 setback.
Priscilla Chow and
Anusha Perinkolam won a Thursday night match in the B doubles draw before falling in the semifinals on Friday morning.
Mannan outlasted Union's Loden Bradstreet in a 6-3, 3-6, 13-11 barn-burner to pick up a main-draw singles win, but bowed out to Bondarenko in the second round.
Albert, Brideau, Ring, and Robinson all dropped their first-round matches in the main singles draw. Albert, one of the No. 16 seeds, came back from a set down to force a super breaker against Hamilton's Jessica Marie Pages, but the Lions' top player fell just shy in a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 marathon.
The Lions have concluded their fall slate and will resume play in February, when the spring dual season gets underway.
NOTES
- Albert moved into a tie for 8th all-time in doubles wins (70) and into 11th in career combined wins (124)
- Robinson is now tied for 15th in program history with 113 combined wins, and her 65th doubles victory places her in a tie for 17th all-time
