EWING, N.J. – Marissa Lucca set a program record for points in a game and
Evie Campbell backed her up with the most prolific performance of her young career in the No. 18 TCNJ women's lacrosse team's 21-4 rout of Neumann on Wednesday.
Lucca scored five goals and handed out a career-high nine assists, the last of which gave her a historic 14 points and put her atop the record books. Lucca's remarkable tally eclipsed the previous single-game mark of 13 points established by Leigh Mitchell in 2012 and equaled by Jenny LaRocca in 2022. Her nine assists were one shy of the school record shared by Mitchell and LaRocca.
Campbell proved a more than capable running mate, scoring four goals in the first seven minutes and change – two of them assisted by Lucca – and dishing out four assists for a huge career high of eight points.
TCNJ (11-2) wasted no time announcing its intentions, getting goals from Lucca and Campbell inside the opening minute. Campbell ignited another quick-strike batch of scoring, depositing another goal of her own before setting up one for fellow rookie
Ella Okurowski.
Kelly Nevins found the back of the net twice in less than a minute,
Ashly Herlihy scored a goal and assisted on one by Lucca, and Campbell struck twice more during a spurt of six unanswered goals that took a little more than three minutes. By the midway point of the first quarter, the Lions had amassed a double-digit advantage and started a running clock.
Lucca scored 24 seconds into the second quarter and added two more goals to make it 13-0 before the Knights (5-8) got on the board with 3:52 to go in the first half. Lucca, however, fed
Emily Potenza for a goal with 34 seconds left to put the blue and gold on top 14-1 at the break.
Lucca ramped up her pursuit of history with three consecutive assists – to Potenza, Nevins, and
Sydney Sieja – in the third quarter.
After Herlihy netted a highlight-reel goal 45 seconds into the final frame, Lucca matched the points record with an assist on a goal by Nevins, who made it 19-3 with 12:57 to go.
Lucca landed all alone atop the record books with 10:48 remaining, hitting a cutting Potenza in stride for a goal and her 14
th point of the day.
