Waseleski records fifth win over season in extra inning marathon

Senior pitcher Dave Waseleski collected the win in relief on Sunday.

Ewing, NJ…The No. 11 ranked Lions of The College of New Jersey needed extra inning, but pulled off a 6-5 win over Rutgers University-Camden on Sunday afternoon in George Ackerman Park. TCNJ is now 23-8 overall and 11-4 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors drop to 13-20 overall and 2-12 in the conference.

The 12 inning effort for the Scarlet Raptors ties a program mark for the longest contest in baseball history, a feat they have achieved now eight times.

TCNJ jumped out to a 3-1 lead after six innings before the Scarlet Raptors tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh inning and held a 4-3 lead before adding another run and bringing a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning. The Lions scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning when senior Gerard Haran (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) lead off with a walk and was pinch ran for by junior Matt Barrett (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley). Jeff Botti sacrificed him over to second on a bunt before RUC intentionally walked Andrew Cosgrove. Freshman Ryan Anzelone (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) pinch hit and singles to right center field before senior Tyler Hall (Stockton, NJ/Immaculata) singled to short and drove in the winning run.

Senior Brian Kraus (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) started the match-up for the Lions and had a no hitter until the fifth inning before leaving the game with no decision after 6.1 innings of work with one earned run off three hits with six strikeouts. Senior reliever Dave Waseleski (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) collected the win in relief after working 4.2 innings in his team-leading 14th appearance. Waseleski is now 5-0 with all five wins coming in relief as he scattered two hits and fanned four in the outing.

Rutgers-Camden’s senior Tim Whitman (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) started and went 6.2 innings with one earned run and four strikeouts before sophomore Adam Sanchez (Leominster, MA/Worcester Academy) entered the game and threw for 1.2 innings with one earned run off one hit. Junior John Gladden (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) took the loss after three plus inning and drops to 2-5 after allowing one run with two walks and a strikeout.

Senior Tom Terrill (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) added a solo homerun in the top of the 8th inning and finished the day with a 3-6 effort with a pair of runs scored.

For the Lions, Haran added an RBI on a sacrifice fly and now has 198 career RBI’s, while junior short stop Jeff Toth (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville) was 2-6 with a double and an RBI and his 16th stolen base of the year, while senior Blake Bullis (Delran, NJ/Delran) added a double, the 51st of his career and tallied his team-best 18th stolen base of the season after finishing 1-5 at the plate.
