Rowan hands Lions 6-4 loss in extra innings

Ewing, NJ…Rowan University’s junior pitcher Joe Cichy (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) pitched a complete game win as his Profs beat No. 13 ranked The College of New Jersey in 10 innings on Friday at George Ackerman Park. Cichy tossed his first complete game in collecting the win to improve to 4-2 on the year.

Rowan now stands at 11-9 overall and 3-2 in the NJAC, while TCNJ drops to 14-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.

TCNJ tied the action at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Profs took control for good with the winning runs in the top of the 10th after junior Rob Ritterson (Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA) led off with a double to right center field. Ritterson moved to third on a ground out before coming home on an RBI single by sophomore Tim Barnshaw (Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick). Barnshaw scored an RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman David Lenig (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) to give Rowan a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Cichy would hold the Lions in check in the bottom of the inning as the Profs turned a double play to end the game and the Lions’ hopes of tying the score.

For the game, Barnshaw went 3-4 at the plate with three RBI’s, and a run scored, while sophomore Tom Ready (Blenheim, NJ/Triton Regional) was 2-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

TCNJ’s senior catcher Gerard Haran (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) added his team leading sixth homerun of the season with a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning to start TCNJ’s offense. Haran, TCNJ’s career homerun leader now has 41 homeruns on his career and was 2-4 in the game. Junior centerfielder Dave Mebs (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) was 2-2 with two runs scored and added a double for the Lions.

TCNJ’s senior Brian Kraus (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) threw five plus innings for the Lions and yielded three earned runs off four hits with three strikeouts and five walks before junior Nick Amabile (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) replaced him and worked 1.1 innings with two hits. Junior Matt Barrett (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) worked three innings in taking the loss (0-1) and struck out four with two earned runs off three hits.

TCNJ travels to NJCU on Saturday for a noon doubleheader with the Gothic Knights, while Rowan University hosts Kean in a noon doubleheader.
