Lions steamroll Bobcats, 9-0

Ewing, NJ…Ranked 26th in Division III, the Lions of The College of New Jersey posted an impressive 9-0 win over Bates College on Wednesday. TCNJ improves to 11-6, while Bates drops to 4-10 on the year.
The Lions have now beaten seven of their 17 opponents this season by a score of 9-0.

At first singles, TCNJ's sophomore Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Bates' senior Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, PA/George School). Ranked first in the latest ITA regional singles poll, Shtemberg stands at 23-8 on the year after Wednesday's win.

TCNJ's top pair of senior Christina Contrafatto (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and Shtemberg were also winners at first doubles as they beat Bates's Grissa and sophomore Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, PA/The Peddie School), 8-3. The Lion pair improves to 21-9 together this season with a 12-4 dual meet record, while the Bobcats' pair drops to 5-2 this spring with one another. TCNJ's Shtemberg and Contrafatto are ranked third regionally, while Bates' top pair was ranked 17th in the same poll and saw their five-match win streak snapped.

TCNJ's junior Haley Kutner (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Dwight Englewood) and sophomore Stefanie Haar (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) were also victorious at third doubles and are 9-4 together.
