TCNJ tennis rolls to 122nd NJAC win

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey's women's tennis team opened the new season on Wednesday. Ranked No. 24 in the final poll last year, TCNJ's women's team posted a 9-0 win over previously unbeaten Richard Stockton College. With the win, TCNJ's women's team has now won 122 consecutive NJAC matches dating back to the fall of 1982. TCNJ is now 1-0 overall and in the NJAC, while the Ospreys fall to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC. The Lions are the league's defending champions, having won every championship crown and opened the new season on their run for their 26th straight title.

TCNJ's junior Stefanie Haar (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) played at first singles for the Lions and posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over RSC's senior Christa Phillips (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth), while teaming at second double with freshman Felice Trinh (Linden, NJ/Linden) for the 8-0 win over junior Christy Alexander (Centerville, IN/Centerville) and junior Kelli Wiliams (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape).

TCNJ will travel to William Smith College (Geneva, NY) this weekend to compete in the three-day ITA Northeast Regional Singles and Doubles Championships, September 26-28.

TCNJ had several players earn seeds in the singles and doubles draws. Seeded sixth in the 64-player singles draw is Haar, while senior Haley Kutner (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Dwight Englewood) and Trinh were among the players tapped for placement in the 9-16 seeds.

Kutner and her partner, freshman Christie Pollin (Mendham, NJ/Gill St. Bernard) earned the No. 2 seed in the 32-team field, while the Lion pair of Haar and Trinh earned the No. 5 seed.

The singles and doubles champion from the ITA East Regional Championships will earn a spot at the 2008 ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama on October 16-19.
