Lions outslug Richard Stockton, 12-11

(Pomona, NJ) – College of New Jersey (12-12-1, 4-3) rallied from a four-run deficit with five runs in the seventh inning to defeat Richard Stockton (13-9, 2-6) 12-11 in an NJAC game today. Chris Esperon (Union/Union Catholic) went 5-5 with a home run and three RBI while Vince Mazzaccaro (Gloucester/Gloucester Catholic) was 2-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored for the Lions.

Pat Johnson (Hamilton/Steinert) allowed one run on one hit, a solo homer by Mike Wasco (Riverside/Riverside), in 2.2 innings of relief pitching for the win. Joe Marchitelli (Jackson/Jackson) yielded just one hit in two scoreless innings for a save. Stockton's Chris Wedding (Toms River/TR East) went 3-4 with a double and an RBI while Matt Allen (Salem/ Woodstown) was 2-4 with a double and two RBI for Stockton.

TCNJ trailed 11-7 entering the seventh inning. Jeff Toth (Parlin/Sayreville War Memorial) and Mazzaccaro ripped RBI doubles and Esperon added an RBI single as the Lions scored a total of five runs on four hits and an error for a 12-11 lead. One Stockton batter reached base in each of the last three innings, but Johnson and Marchitelli preserved the one-run lead for the 12-11 TCNJ triumph.

Earlier, Stockton erased a 3-0 deficit with seven runs on six hits and two TCNJ errors in the second inning for a 7-3 lead. Allen stroked a two-run double while Scott Fisher (Toms River/ TR East) and Shaune Collins (Cherry Hill/CH East) each contributed RBI singles during the outburst. The Ospreys also led 10-6 after five innings and 11-7 after six frames before College of New Jersey rallied for the win.

Stockton will play an NJAC game at Rutgers-Camden on Friday at 3:30 pm. TCNJ will host Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC game tomorrow at 3:30.
