Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey field hockey team picked up another win against a ranked opponent on Sunday as the Lions scored once in each half to get by Juniata College 2-0.
The win was the fifth straight for the fifth-ranked Lions as they improved to 15-2 on the season. TCNJ is also a solid 4-1 against opponents ranked in the top 20.
Juniata, which is ranked 20th, dropped to 10-5 on the year.
The Lions also supported the "Play for the Cure" as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The players work pink t-shirts during warm-ups and wore pink shoelaces, in addition to holding several raffles to benefit the Susan. G. Komen Foundation.
TCNJ cashed in on a penalty corner in the closing minute of the first half as senior
Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) knocked in a short pass from
Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic). That goal came 28 seconds before the intermission.
That score came minutes after Notos gained a step on the Juniata defense for a partial breakaway, but sent a low shot inches wide of the near post.
The Lions tried to add to its lead early in the second half as Mitchell directed a shot on goal that got behind Juniata goalie Janelle Howard (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), but Caroline Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Concord) swept in with a defensive save keeping it a one-goal game.
Howard also came up big later in the period charging out and stopping Notos on breakaway.
TCNJ continued to keep the pressure on the Eagles as
Camille Passucci (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) was denied by a defensive save by Meghan McGlone (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) right at the near post.
That second goal finally came with 10:51 remaining as Notos and
Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) worked a give-and-go with Notos coming away with her first goal of the season.
Senior
Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) had a pair of saves for her sixth shutout of the season.
Howard made six stops for Juniata.
TCNJ rounds out New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, October 25 hosting 17th-ranked Rowan University at 7:30 p.m.
