Ewing, NJ ….. The College of New Jersey convincingly closed out its first unbeaten season in Lions' Stadium since 1998 as the Lions rolled past Western Connecticut State University 47-10 on Saturday.
The win gave TCNJ a perfect 5-0 home record this season as the Lions moved to 6-3 overall, while improving to 5-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. That sixth victory also clinched the 22nd winning season under long-time head coach Eric Hamilton.
The loss dropped the Colonials to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
TCNJ's offense was on track throughout as the Lions racked up 576 yards with 373 of those coming on the ground. The Lions spread the wealth as
Joe Falco (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township) ran for 130 yards on 13 carries, while
Jay Donoghue (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) ground out 102 yards on just six rushes. Donoghue, who only played the opening half, went 9-for-13 through the air for 148 yards and three touchdowns.
TCNJ's offense put its stamp on the game right from the start scoring four touchdowns in the opening quarter with Donoghue going to the air for three of those scores. The quarterback first connected with
John Hoehn (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) on a 10-yard strike and moments later found a wide open
Brian Mills (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) from 32 yards. The Donoghue and Hoehn combination got the Lions on the scoreboard again with their second TD hook-up as this one covered 20 yards. All three of those scores came within the game's opening 7:49.
The Lions then used its ground game as Falco raced to the near corner of the end for a 3-yard run as the hosts held a commanding 26-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
Donoghue extended that lead with a 10-yard run early in the second quarter, before the Colonials received a 27-yard field goal from Tim Schwietzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon Wagnor).
Specials teams produced the final score of the half as junior
James Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) blocked a punt, while Nicholas Lukaszewicz (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) scooped up the free ball. Lukaszewicz then pitched the ball back to
Derek Goreczny (Somerville, NJ/Hunterdon Central), who covered the final 19 yards for the touchdown.
Tyler Olsson (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) added the point after as TCNJ built a 40-3 lead at the half.
Things were at a more modest pace in the second half as each team added a touchdown in the fourth quarter with Lion quarterback Dan Dugan (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) racing in from seven yards, while the Colonials scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Falaguerra (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) to Curtis Walker (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy).
Walker had a big game for WestConn hauling in nine catches for 145 yards and that touchdown.
Senior
John Kinzel (Howell, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and
Nick Bricker (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) each finished with eight tackles.
For WestConn, Mike Lacaria (Watertown, CT/Watertown) picked up 10 tackles, with six of them being solo.
The Lions round out the regular season next Saturday heading to rival Rowan University to take on the Profs at 1 p.m., while the Colonials return home to host William Paterson University in a noon start.
