Bendijo gets 100th win as Lions win twice

Karisse Bendijo reached a pair of milestones on Sunday.
Ewing, NJ...It was a busy and historic day for The College of New Jersey women's tennis team as the Lions picked up two more conference wins on Sunday, while their top doubles team became the all-time leaders in wins by a team.

The Lions started the day with a 9-0 win over Rutgers University-Camden in the first meeting between the schools. The Scarlet Raptors are in their first season of play as an intercollegiate program. TCNJ capped the day with another 9-0 win, this time besting Rutgers University-Newark. Those two wins pushed the program's winning streak against New Jersey Athletic Conference opponents to 141 straight.

TCNJ is 5-0 on the season with all of those wins coming within the conference. Rutgers-Camden dipped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Newark is 3-2 overall and 1-2 against league foes.

In the win over Rutgers-Camden, the doubles pair of Karisse Bendijo (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and Allison Tierney (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) cruised 8-0 and in the process became the program's all-time leader in wins by teammates with 49 passing Mandy Mitchell and Nicole Podendorf.

The Lions claimed the other two doubles spots as Paige Aiello (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and Deborah Wu (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) won at second singles and the pair of Emily Petersack (Mercerville, NJ/Notre Dame) and Alex Bologno (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) collected an 8-1 win in the final spot.

TCNJ won all six singles matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Against Rutgers-Newark, the Lions celebrated another milestone as Bendijo earned her 100th combined win in doubles by the score of 8-0. She was again paired with Tierney and notched their 50th win as teammates. The junior then began adding to that number winning at first singles by the scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Tierney, Aiello Wu, Petersack each added wins in singles, while freshman Sarah Lippincott (Millville, NJ/Millville) won in the sixth position completing the win over the Scarlet Raiders.

The Lions round out conference play on Wednesday, September 21 heading to Ramapo College to face the Roadrunners at 3:30 p.m.
