Box Score

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's basketball team suffered a 44-37 loss to Kean University in a low-scoring affair in Union, NJ on Wednesday night.

The Lions (6-9, 1-4) surrendered just 12 field goals the entire game, but had trouble on the offensive end, shooting a season-low 28 percent from the floor. The Cougars (3-13, 2-3) snapped a 10-game losing streak in seizing their second New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Senior Kyle Rawson (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) led all scorers with 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds. He and classmate Albert Matlock (Trenton, NJ/Solebury) each knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the game. Matlock finished with six points.

Kean had ten players appear in the scoring column, none of whom reached double figures. Ryan Duffy had a team-high nine points, all coming from behind the arc.

Both teams lumbered through the opening 20 minutes of play. Rawson's first three-point field goal of the evening gave TCNJ a 10-4 lead early on before Kean rattled off six straight points to tie the match. Missed shots and turnovers on both sides of the court led to a series of scoring droughts as Lions entered the break with a 16-15 lead.

TCNJ led by as many as seven points in the second half. A 10-1 surge gave them a 26-19 advantage, but the Cougars bounced back to knot the game 29 with 11:51 remaining.

The Lions allowed just one basket in the final 10 minutes of play, but they were unable to find a sustained rhythm on offense. Matlock buried a pair of three-pointers in the final five minutes, but Kean capitalized on its free throws to generate enough offense to grapple their first win in over a month.

It was the lowest offensive output for TCNJ this season, but they'll have another shot at the Cougars on Wednesday, February 8 in Packer Hall. The Lions will look to break their five-game skid on Saturday at Ramapo College. The Roadrunners own a record of 11-4 and are 2-2 in conference play. Game-time is set for 3 p.m.
