TCNJ basketball marches into weekend doubleheader

Angelica Espositio and Jason Chalmers have been key components to the Lions recent success.

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's and women's basketball teams are on a roll that continues to gain momentum as they prepare to host Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Packer Hall.

The two squads have combined to win 12 out of their last 13 games with nine of those victories coming against conference opponents. Head coach Dawn Henderson's team will square off against the Scarlet Raiders at 1 p.m. followed by head coach Kelly Williams and the men's game at 3 p.m.

The women's team is a perfect 6-0 in the NJAC and 9-2 overall this season. The Lions have captured eight straight contests, which is the longest winning streak since TCNJ won 13 in a row during the 2008-09 season. That team advanced to the 2009 NCAA Division III Final Four.

The Lions lead the NJAC in scoring offense, tallying 76.1 points per game. Two components to their success offensively include their efficiency shooting from three-point range and the free-throw line. TCNJ tops the conference in those two categories, knocking down over 32 percent of their 3-pointers (94-of-290) and 74 percent of their foul shots.

Sophomore Angelica Esposito (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) and junior Kylie O'Donnell (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) rank first and second in the NJAC in free throw percentage. Esposito tops the league at 92 percent and O'Donnell is making 91 percent of her opportunities from the charity stripe.

Rutgers-Newark is 7-5 this season and 3-3 in league play. They dropped a 65-64 decision to Ramapo College this past Wednesday night. The Scarlet Raider defense has been a strength this season and ranks third in the conference, giving up just 59.5 points per game.

The men's team has won four of its last five games, most recently defeating Rowan University 73-70 on the road Wednesday night. Junior Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Life Center Academy) put together his finest all-around game statistically, scoring 17 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing out seven assists.

Down in the paint, sophomore Bobby Brackett (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) has been a steady, dominant force and continues to lead Division III basketball in double-doubles with 11 in 12 games. He also sits third nationally in rebounds per game with 13.7.

Rutgers-Newark is 8-5 overall and sits in second place with a 4-2 mark in the NJAC. The Red Raiders have won their last two games, defeating Rutgers University-Camden 77-62 and Ramapo College 64-61 this past Wednesday.
