Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey football team looks to build off its Homecoming victory as they travel to Southern Virginia University for a 1:00 pm contest on Saturday.
The Lions defeated William Paterson on the strength of four touchdown runs from
Chad Scott (which tied a school record) en route to the 14-point win. It was Scott's second straight hundred yard game. TCNJ's defense struggled against the big pass allowing 389 yards, but an opportunistic pick six by
Shane Kelley jettisoned the Lions to a first-half lead. A stout run defense held the Knights to minus-19 rushing yards and put the Lions in the win column for the first time this season.
Southern Virginia dropped its last contest to Kean University, falling behind 17-0 before ultimately losing 32-3. The Knights gained only 2.7 yards per attempt on the ground and had just 212 yards of total offense in the loss.
Expect to see plenty of rushing attempts in the game as Southern Virginia brings the NJAC's second best rushing offense at 200.5 yards per game against the Lions. The option attack is led by quarterback
Ty Jones along with running backs
Michael Frye and
Seth Hanson. Jones has completed just nine passes all season, so getting stops on early downs and forcing the Knights into third-and-long situations will be a huge factor.
Senior
Abdelrahman Ragab leads the Lions front seven with 11.5 tackles for loss, and Kelley leads TCNJ with two forced fumbles. Linebacker
Max Busca should also have a busy week, he currently leads TCNJ with 51 total tackles.
The Lions will attempt to keep the Knights off the field by playing ball-control offense. TCNJ ranks second in the conference in time of possession second-most in the conference and keeping the defense off the field as much as possible will keep the defensive front strongest. Along with Scott, the Lions will lean on
Khani Glover, who has averaged over ten attempts per game on the ground.
Following this week's game the Lions will return home on Friday for senior night, taking on Rowan University and Southern Virginia will close out their season traveling to Christopher Newport on Saturday.
