Winter Haven, Fla … The College of New Jersey baseball team continued to swing hot bats as they defeated Babson College 10-1 on Monday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
Â
The Lions (5-1) pounded out 16 hits in the game to give sophomore right-hander
Joe Cirillo (Fairfield, NJ/DePaul Catholic) plenty of run support for his third run of the season. Every starter had at least one hit, while leadoff hitter
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) and second baseman
Ben Varone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each had three.
Â
There were plenty of storylines in this game and the first was penned by Rizzi. Entering the game, Rizzi had scored 104 runs in his career, but for the first time, he relied on only himself to cross home plate. He led off the bottom of the first with a shot to left-center that cleared the fence for his first career home run.
Two batters later, senior
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) stroked the 100
th hit of his colorful career at TCNJ. The left-handed swinger accomplished the feat in 318 at bats.
Â
Down 1-0, the Beavers (2-3) tied it up in the top of the fourth when Mark Webber doubled to left-center to score Jack Halpin. That would be the only run they could produce off of Cirillo.
Â
The Lions wasted little time reclaiming the lead, plating three runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Alex Christian (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) doubled to left and raced home when sophomore
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) laced a single to left-center. Varone followed with a single to left before Rizzi plated Follet with a base hit to deep short. Sophomore
Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) produced the fifth hit of the inning, serving a base hit to right to put the Lions up 4-1.
Â
The offense continued to apply pressure and racked up four more runs in the sixth. Varone singled with one out and Rizzi came within inches of his second homer of the day. He knocked one off the top of the fence in left-center for a double. Anderson was hit by a pitch and Roberts walked to force in a run.
Â
Senior
Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) ripped the first pitch he saw down the left-field line to score two more runs. It was the ninth and 10
th RBI of the season for Turner. Sophomore
Zach Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) roped a single to right to make it an 8-1 game.
Â
The Lions tallied two more in the seventh, highlighted by a long home run off the bat of
CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). Gearhart, Follet, and Turner all finished with two hits.
Â
Cirillo struck out a career-high eight batters to improve to 3-0 this season. He was extremely effective mixing his pitches and keeping the Beaver hitters guessing. Cirillo did not issue a walk and has now walked only two batters in 20 innings pitched to compliment a 0.90 earned run average.

TCNJ will face UMass-Dartmouth tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. in Lake Myrtle.
