Ewing, NJ ... The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team will host Salisbury University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Lions Stadium.
The third-ranked Lions (12-1) have won five straight matches, while the fourth-ranked Sea Gulls are riding a ten-game winning streak. TCNJ is coming off of a 15-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden University on Tuesday night. On Thursday night, Salisbury defeated Wesley College 19-2.
The biggest game in college women's lacrosse on Saturday may come down to defense, and no defense has been better than the Lions this spring. They lead the nation in goals against average, surrendering just 3.77 goals per game. TCNJ is led by 2015 All-American
Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) in the backfield. Her size, speed, and athleticism give her a dominant presence on the field and Morrison will be a key figure in the contest. Midfielder
Megan Devlin (Marmora, ,NJ/Ocean City) and freshman goaltender
Miranda Chrone (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) have also played significant roles on the defensive unit and will have an impact on the outcome this Saturday.
Salisbury will counter the TCNJ defense with an offensive unit that has averaged 13.13 goals per game this season. The strength of the Sea Gull attack is in its depth of talent. Four different players have scored 20-plus goals and six players have tallied 18 or more. Senior
Megan Wallenhorst spearheads the attack and is as much of a threat to score as she is to set the table. She has found the back of the net 21 times this season, but leads the team in assists with 33. Junior midfielder
Gabbi Nieves boasts a team-high 28 goals this season. She is also active in pursuit with a team-best 16 caused turnovers to compliment 20 ground ball pick-ups and 14 draw controls.
No player on the field will have more goals to her credit than TCNJ senior
Cortney Natalicchio (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt). She has compiled 39 goals this season to go along with 19 assists for 58 total points.
Erin Waller (Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) has been a playmaker all season, netting 19 tallies and assisting on 12 scores. Junior
Mia Blackman (Arlington, Va./Field School) and sophomore
Emily Kratz (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) are threats on the attack with 17 and 16 goals apiece this season.
History indicates that this will be a fierce battle between two reputable programs. TCNJ left Salisbury with a 10-3 victory last season, but the Sea Gulls have claimed three of the last four meetings, including the last two in Lions Stadium. Salisbury has won three NCAA titles since 2010, while the 13 NCAA Division III championships owned by the Lions are the most of any women's lacrosse program in the sport's history.
Opening face-off is slated for 1 p.m.
