Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Hot From Deep in Non-Conference Win

Madison, NJ… The College of New Jersey men's basketball team shot an incredible 17-35 from three-point range rolling to a 94-71 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Monday night. The win is the sixth straight for the Lions, who improve to 6-1 on the year, while the Devils fall to 0-6.

Leading 9-8 early, TCNJ took control of the game with a 10-0 run. Three pointers by Randall Walko (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) and Liam Byrne (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) bracketed the rally. Walko finished with 14 points on 5-7 shooting, going 4-6 from deep.

The Lions would break the game open later in the first half, using a 14-2 run on the strength of four triples. Eric Murdock, Jr. (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater) hit a lay-up followed by a Walko three. Following a Devil lay-up, Walko hit another from behind the arc, before Ryan Jensen (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) and Niall Carpenter (Westampton, NJ/Westampton) capped the barrage that gave TCNJ a 49-25 lead.

TCNJ led at the half 51-27.

Early in the second half, Murdock, Jr. extended the lead to 29 on back-to-back three pointers. He finished with 18 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Murdock, Jr. passed Fred Wetzel for 14th place on the Lions career scoring list.

It was a long ball by Mike Walley (Yardley, PA/Notre Dame) that gave TCNJ its largest lead of the game at 33 with just under 13 minutes to play.

The Devils made their final run with an 11-2 stretch cutting the lead to 20, but would get no closer.

Shawn Smith led the Devils with 15 off the bench. FDU-Florham held a 39-36 rebounding advantage.

TCNJ will close out its three game road trip Wednesday with a trip to Rowan. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
