Singles play leads Lions to weekend wins

Ewing, NJ ... The College of New Jersey women's tennis team moved to 9-1 this season with a pair of dominant victories this weekend.

The 34th-ranked Lions topped the University of Rochester on Saturday, 8-1 at Mercer County Park. They returned indoors to the Student Recreation Center to defeat William Smith College by a 6-3 final. TCNJ had to rally on Sunday, falling behind 3-0 following the doubles competition.

The Lions were perfect in singles matches over the weekend, winning all 12 contests. Eight of those victories came in  straight sets.

TCNJ is idle during the week, but will visit Mary Washington University on Saturday, April 1st and will take the courts at 12:30 p.m.

Saturday Match: The College of New Jersey 8  University of Rochester 1

The Lions swept the singles matches and won two of three doubles competitions to roll past the University of Rochester, 8-1. Sneha Rangu (East Windsor, NJ/Mercer County Health Science Academy) posted a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at first singles, while Brittany Reedman (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) also claimed a straight set win (6-4, 6-3) at second singles. Katie Buchbinder (Scotch Plains, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) made quick work of her opponent at third singles (6-1, 6-1) and Anna Prestera (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) won her tie-breaker set 10-3. Alyssa Baldi (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) cruised to a pair of 6-2 wins at fifth singles and Mackenzie Holleran (Allendale, NJ/Northern  Highland) capped the sweep by winning the final two sets 6-3 amd 10-4.

Prestera and Baldi teamed up at second doubles to register an 8-2 win. Audrey Chen (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North) joined Rangu at third doubles to edge their opponents, 8-6.

Sunday Match: The College of New Jersey 6  William Smith College 3

After falling behind 3-0 in doubles competition, the Lions rallied with six straight wins in the singles play. Rangu dropped the first set 6-3, but stormed back to top Hannah More 6-4 and 6-2 in the final two sets. Reedman breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 straight set win at second singles. Buchbinder grinded out a 7-6 (7-4) triumph in her opening set and then took care off business in the second set, 6-1.

Prestera turned back Kate Foley 6-4, 6-3 and Baldi posted a straight set victory 6-3, 6-2. It was up to Holleran to make it a perfect sweep in singles and she came through with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 straight set victory.
