Winter Haven, FL... The College of New Jersey baseball team picked up a victory on Monday afternoon over University of Wisconsin La-Crosse by a final score of 3-2. The Lions record improves to 2-2, while the Eagles drop to 2-2.Â
With two outs in the top of the second,
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee)Â gunned down a runner trying to score with a laser throw from right field to end the inning and keep it scoreless.
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) ended the top of the third inning with a gem of a defensive play, as he corralled what looked like a base hit going up the middle and threw out the baserunner.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Lions got on the board with a manufactured run.
Steve Bucci (Washington Twp. NJ/Washington Twp.) led off with a base knock, then advanced to second on a passed ball.
Matt Giacose (Wycoff, NJ/Ramapo) moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt, then
Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.Â
The pushed another run across in the bottom of the fourth. Shindler led off with a double, then
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) singled and advanced Shindler to third. Lindsay stole second, and on the throw Shindler was alert and bolted home to make it 2-0.Â
The Eagles drew even with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, yet the Lions took the lead right back.With two outs, Shindler ripped one down the right field line that caromed off of the first basemen, and hustled into second. Lindsay came through in the clutch as he laced a base hit to center to drive Shindler home.
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) shut the door in the ninth inning and was the winning pitcher.
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) put forth a strong outing in his first start of the season. He went 7 innings with no runs allowed, only four hits, and four strikeouts. Shindler finished the day 2-4 with two runs scored, and Lindsay posted a 2-4 line with the key RBI.Â
The Lions will return to the diamond tomorrow to take on Utica College in a doubleheader with game one beginning at 2:30 pm.
