Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey baseball team swept New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Ramapo College in a double header on Sunday by final scores of 11-0 and 11-2.
In game one, the Lions jumped on the Roadrunners right away with an RBI single from
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) in the bottom of the first inning.The Roadrunners best scoring chance came in the top of the second inning, as they put runners on second and third with nobody out, however starting pitcher
Joe Cirillo (Fairfield, NJ/DePaul Catholic) got out of the jam without surrendering any runs. He induced a pair of ground outs, and ended the inning with a looking strikeout.
The Lions extended their advantage to three by way of RBI singles from
Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) and
Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) in the bottom of the second.
It remained a 3-0 ballgame until the Lions blew it open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Jacob Simon (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown) worked a bases loaded walk, and
Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) drove in two with an RBI single to make it 6-0 Lions. Cirillo shut the Roadrunner offense down, as he pitched eight shutout innings and only allowed five hits. With the win, he moved into third place all time in program history in wins as he now has 22 on his career.
In game two, the Lions struck early again as Shindler drove in a run with a base knock through the left side, and
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) also slapped a single between the shortstop and third basemen. TCNJ pushed across two more in the bottom of the fifth as
Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Lindsay racked up RBIs. McCarthy drove in another couple of runs to make it a 6-0 ballgame. The Lions were able to tack on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.Â
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was the winning pitcher, and he went five innings and allowed no runs and and only one hit while striking out four batters.
The Lions will resume action tomorrow, with a road trip to Alvernia University for a 3:30pm start.
Today, TCNJ also held Military Day & Family Day. The Lions also recognized Green Dot Day, which is a bystander intervention program whose mission is to prevent power based violence.
