EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's swimming team won all five events during an impressive opening performance on the first day of the annual TCNJ Invitational on Friday.
Zoe Chan and
Shannon Hesse each won an individual event and contributed to a pair of first-place relays for the Lions, who racked up 369 team points on the night. New Paltz was second with 208.5, followed by Merchant Marine (199.5) and Salisbury (149).
Jamie Bowne, Hesse,
Rachel Hannah, and Chan kicked off the finals session with a convincing victory in the 200 free relay. The quartet posted a time of 1:37.17, nearly six seconds clear of the runners-up from New Paltz and good for 17
th in Division III this season.
Faith Cortright won the 500 free in a blazing 5:18.00, nearly eight seconds in front of teammate
Allison Lowry in second. Cortright's time was a season-best and lowered her prelim mark by more than a second.
Sarah Burton made it a 1-2-3 podium sweep for the Lions in the 500 with a 5:26.10, easily a lifetime best. Ren Wolstenholme placed eighth at 5:40.95.
Chan marked a new season best with a first-place swim of 2:09.26 in the 200 IM, while
Jamie Bowne lowered her own collegiate best from prelims to a 2:11.88 in the finals session.
Haley Crispell (2:18.20),
Autumn-Brook Tucker (2:19.16), and
Colleen Scanlon (2:21.55) all posted season bests to round out the top-eight, and
Kori Jelinek netted a season-best 2:16.23 to win the consolation final, which would have put her fifth in the championship heat.
Hesse logged a new lifetime best with a 24.01 in the 50 free final, more than a second ahead of
Cameron Carrazza (25.10) in second.
Megan Healey (25.49) had a season-best 25.49 to place fourth, and
Mackenzie Wall was fifth at 25.93.
Brianna Hatzold placed seventh with a 26.42.
Hannah, Crispell, Chan, and Hesse polished off the night with a big swim in the 400 medley relay, cruising to victory in a time (3:58.03) that places them 19
th in the country.
The TCNJ Invitational continues Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
