STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A well-balanced effort helped the TCNJ women's track and field team run away with its fourth consecutive NJAC indoor championship.
On the strength of seven gold medals – two from relays, two from sprints, two from jumps, and another from distance – the Lions racked up 217.17 points to convincingly outpace runner-up Rowan by almost 75 team points.
Maria Grill and
Amanda Demko each earned an individual title and contributed to the first-place 4x200-meter relay for TCNJ, which racked up 10 other medals on the day at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Grill won the 200-meter dash in 25.48 seconds and was runner-up in the 400, where Demko headlined a 1-2-4 effort for the Lions with a clocking of 57.68. Grill's 58.55 was a personal best, and
Valandra Riggins placed fourth in 59.54.
Demko, Grill, and Riggins also teamed with
Ashlyn MacLure to dominate the 4x200 relay. The quartet finished the race in 1:43.09, just .21 seconds off the program record and more than seven seconds clear of second-place Rowan. Demko (25.98) and MacLure (26.06) took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200.
The Lions also grabbed gold in the distance medley relay as Sarah Tuohy,
Erin Buquicchio,
Olivia Class, and
Paige Hammond decimated the field by more than 15 seconds with a time of 13:02.74.
Eliza Bruncaj,
Erin Hanlon,
Victoria Purritano, and
Sameerah Khan were runners-up in the 4x400 relay, finishing only .61 seconds back of first-place Rowan.
Kelsey Kobus won gold in the 3000 meters, crossing the line in 10:53.79.
Salini Iyer took third in 11:12.12, with
Jazzlyn Diaz fourth (11:14.32) and
Nicole Fenske seventh (11:25.21). Iyer was also second in the mile with a career-best 5:21.58, and Diaz placed fourth in 5:23.50.
Cassidy Quinn claimed bronze in the 5000 meters (19:21.37), with
Jenna Priore in fifth (19:28.15) and
Riley Stellitano in sixth (19:39.87).
Alli Uhl paced the pride in a terrific 800-meter effort for the Lions, taking silver in 2:15.81. Hanlon's personal-best 2:23.79 was good for fourth, and Khan finished in seventh with a career-best 2:24.91.
Karla Gomez-Matos highlighted a strong field performance with a personal-best mark of 5.21 meters to claim gold in the long jump. Bruncaj was second with a big PR of 5.11 meters, part of a spectacular indoor championship debut in which the rookie also claimed silver in the 4x400 relay, bronze in the 60-meter hurdles, and fourth in the triple jump.
Nicole Lester won the pole vault competition handily, clearing 3.20 meters. Teammates
Julia Dakwar and
Afreen Satarawalla shared third-place honors with matching 2.75-meter clearances.
Kayley Harnett and
Abigail Pfaff split second place in the high jump, each securing a new PR at 1.56 meters.
Bruncaj was fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best 10.55 meters, and
Zoe Iovino was close behind in fifth (10.38 meters). She also placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best 9.15 seconds, with Purritano in fourth at 9.39.
Riggins finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with a personal-record 7.98 seconds, and MacLure was hot on her heels with a PR 8.00 seconds.
Jessica Reilly (14.54 meters) and
Emily Diszler (13.79 meters) each notched big PRs in the weight throw to place fifth and eighth, respectively, and
Edith Gonzalez was seventh in the shot put (11.19 meters).
