GENEVA, OHIO – Amanda Murillo became the first All-American thrower in more than three decades and two relays qualified for their respective championship heats on a stirring first day of action for the TCNJ women's track and field team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday.

Murillo's mark of 41.30 meters came on her fourth toss, which followed two fouls and a heave of 38.88 meters. It was the lone throw of the senior's half-dozen that crossed the 40-meter threshold and was plenty long enough to land her in eighth place.

With the top-eight placement, Murillo joined elite company in the TCNJ record books as she became the first All-American thrower since Sue Piekarz (discus) in 1991. She is the program's first All-American javelin thrower since Karen Vance in 1989.

The quartet of Ashlyn MacLure, Amanda Demko, Maria Grill, and Valandra Riggins made history in the 4x100-meter relay prelims, shattering the previous program record with a time of 3:46.64 to place fifth overall in preliminaries. The clocking was .37 seconds clear of the former standard, a national championship-winning mark of 47.01 from the 2005 NCAA outdoor meet.

The 4x100-meter relay unit will compete for a national title on Saturday at 12:05 p.m.

Grill and Demko came back a few hours later to run the last two legs of the 4x400-meter relay, joining Alli Uhl and Eliza Bruncaj to finish in 3:49.62. The time was just enough to edge NJAC rival Rowan for the ninth and final qualifying slot, giving the group to compete in the championship heat at 3:50 p.m. Saturday.

Several of the relay participants are set to compete as individuals on Friday: Demko and Grill in the 400-meter dash prelims at 3 p.m. followed by Uhl in the 800 meters at 4 p.m.
