EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's track and field team put itself in prime position to claim another conference title with a strong performance on Day 1 of the NJAC Outdoor Championship on Sunday.
Amanda Murillo won gold in the javelin,
Karla Gomez-Matos took silver in the long jump, and a host of Lions qualified for finals heats on Monday as TCNJ racked up 64 team points to head into Day 2 with a 17-point lead on second-place Rowan.
Murillo, who was runner-up at last year's outdoor meet, handily outdistanced the field with a top throw of 38.43 meters, nearly 4.50 meters clear of the runner-up.
Lily Lorio was fourth at 33.05, while Megan Schearer (30.53m) and
Jolie Sheerin (26.78m) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, to give the Lions four place-winners.
Gomez-Matos, the NJAC indoor champion in the long jump, settled for silver in the outdoor edition with a top mark of 5.18 meters.
Eliza Bruncaj was fifth (4.95m) and
Zoe Iovino sixth (4.83m).
Kelsey Kobus claimed bronze in the steeplechase, posting a 10-second PR of 12:00.29 to pace four TCNJ place-winners.
Molly Bossdorf (12:28.65),
Paige Hammond (13:36.12), and
Emily Prendergast (13:47.92) finished fifth through seventh, respectively.
Maria Grill led a quartet of Lions' finalists in the 400-meter dash, winning the preliminary heat in a career-best 57.38 to notch an AARTFC qualifier.
Amanda Demko was fourth (57.78),
Erin Hanlon seventh (personal-best 1:00.29) seventh, and
Erin Buquicchio (1:00.48) eighth to set up an all-Rowan/TCNJ final.
Valandra Riggins shattered her personal best with a blazing 12.15 to win the 100-meter dash prelims and elevate to fifth on the all-time charts at TCNJ. She'll be joined in the final by teammate
Ashlyn MacLure, who took seventh in a personal-best 12.46.
Bruncaj earned top billing in the 400-meter hurdles prelims with a 1:05.51, headlining a 1-2-3 showing that also featured
Victoria Purritano (1:06.82) in second and
Sameerah Khan (1:08.90) in third.
Bruncaj moved into eighth on the program's all-time list with a personal-best 14.92 in the 100-meter hurdles, placing third to qualify for Monday's final alongside Purritano (15.45) in fourth.
Brittany Schofield led a quartet of place-winners in the 10,000 meters, finishing fifth in 42:07.33. Schofield was the runner-up at last year's outdoor championship.
Tara Donoghue (42:22.70),
Nicole Fenske (42:25.97), and
Nicole Arita (42:33.09) took sixth through eighth, respectively, with Fenske leading for the first half of the race and Arita shaving more than 20 seconds off her previous personal best.
Jessica Reilly was sixth in the hammer throw at 40.18 meters, with
Emily Diszler notching a personal-best 38.89 meters to take seventh and
Jean Walter right behind in eighth (38.82m).
